Bad Bookmarks
Have you ever been reading a book and needed to pause, only to discover there’s no bookmark at hand? The anxiety rises! You have to step away (perhaps to the restroom, or the call of your job) but there’s no bookmark there to hold your place! What do you do? Do you lay the book flat? Dog-ear a page? Perhaps there is something else you can use as a bookmark?
I don’t know if all readers feel the lack-of-bookmark anxiety I often get, but people have found other ways to mark their page throughout history. (To be clear, I do have bookmarks. Lots, even. But I don’t always remember to bring one with me while reading.)
If you can’t imagine what unusual objects someone might grab to mark their spot in a book, here are some articles:
from Bookriot a history of bookmarks
from the Guardian Book Blog
from the librarians of Washington County
In celebration of the MANY unorthodox bookmarks found holding place in a book, we are designing some Bad Bookmarks. Ours are made of paper, and printable, ready for you to color!
